Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 2 Diabetes finger prick

The Cochrane Group tries to conduct reliable and non biased research. They concluded that whole grains can definitely help prevent and ameliorate diabetes. What I cannot understand is this anti-carb movement that has overtaken the web.

Don’t get me wrong, processed foods high in sugar are certainly not good for you. But the idea that grains and even fruits are bad for you is ridiculous!

One of the biggest anti-carb enthusiasts is science writer Gary Taubes. He wrote a book “Why We Get Fat” in which he basically says it’s all carbs. This was basically what Atkin’s said.

Taubes basically criticizes scientific studies as biased and misleading but then uses scientific studies that lend weight to his arguments. In other words he cherry picks articles. His book seems very scientific and is therefore very misleading because he leaves out all the science that counters his position.

I had to laugh because he published what he eats everyday and his recent labs. Basically he eats meat all day long. He brags that his labs shows great lipid levels and the labs are very good. However, his anion gap is high, CO2 low, and BUN is high.

You may not know what that means and I doubt Taubes does either since he is not a doctor or a scientist. Basically his body is in acidosis. Acidosis will eventually lead to inflammation and disease. His body is leaching calcium from his bones to buffer the acid so he is likely to develop osteoporosis in old age and is at very high risk for cancer.

It kills me when someone who has never treated a single patient can try and tell people what to eat. You cannot decide right and wrong solely on a review of the literature. The experience of treating patients weighs heavy into the ability to decide what works and what does not.

Taubes believes all grains are horrible and lead to obesity and disease. You can argue about the science all you want, bottom line is there are millions of Asians and Mediterranean people eating loads of grains right now that will live longer than us and do not have any of the diseases to which we have become accustomed.

Bet you didn’t know it is World Vegan Day! Being vegan isn’t easy. The world has changed a lot but it still is difficult to constantly wonder whether I will be able find appropriate food when going out. But I don’t mind the sacrifices.
